Wolf-Michael Catenhusen hat sich besonders für die politische Berücksichtigung ethischer Probleme durch Wissenschaft und Technik eingesetzt.
Von 1980 bis 2002 war Wolf-Michael Catenhusen Mitglied des Deutschen Bundestages. Hier war er von 1984 bis 1986 Vorsitzender der Enqute-Kommission Chancen und Risiken der Gentechnologie und von 1987 bis 1994 Vorsitzender des Ausschusses fŸr Forschung und Technologie bzw. Forschung, Technologie und TechnikfolgenabschŠtzung (ab November 1989). Am 1. Juli 2002 wurde Catenhusen dann zum StaatssekretŠr im Bundesminsterium fŸr Bildung und Forschung ernannt. Nach der Ernennung von Annette Schavan (CDU) zur neuen Bundesbildungsministerin wurde Catenhusen zum 31. Dezember 2005 in den einstweiligen Ruhestand versetzt. In this statement, the scientists charged the Bush administration with widespread and unprecedented "manipulation of the process through which science enters into its decisions."
As physicists we feel a special responsibility with respect to nuclear weapons; our profession brought them into existence 60 years ago. We wish to express our opposition to a shocking new US policy currently under consideration regarding the use of nuclear weapons. We ask our professional organizations to take a stand on this issue, the Congress of the United States to conduct full public hearings on this subject, and the media and public at large to discuss this new policy and make their voices heard.
